Victor Martinez Denied Bail

Blog

Will remain incarcerated until at least early January

VMartinezIFBB pro Victor Martinez’s comeback hit a major snag when, after winning the Arnold Classic Europe on Oct. 9, he flew back to New York three days later and was detained by immigration authorities. What was thought to be a simple visa issue may in fact by something far more serious; sources tell MMI that today (Nov. 8), Victor was denied bail and will remain in custody until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Jan. 6. He is currently at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in New Jersey awaiting resolution of the problem.

Victor, who was born in the Dominican Republic, won the 2000 NPC Nationals heavyweight and overall titles to earn his IFBB pro card. To compete at the Nationals you need to be a U.S. citizen, so quite why Martinez would need a visa to enter the U.S. is unclear at this point, though rumors are that he is a permanent legal resident. As is why he was detained on this occasion as he came back into the U.S. a few days after Sept. 25’s Sheru Classic in India and has made multiple trips abroad during his pro career. Even though the assumption has always been that Martinez is a U.S. citizen it’s a fact that he always insists that on official scorecards he be shown to be representing the Dominican Republic. It’s not unusual for someone to be proud of the land of his birth.

As of today Victor has been detained for nearly a month, and by the time of his January 6 appearance that will have lengthened to three months. The latest word is that his attorneys are still attempting to secure bail for Victor.
