“I’m doing this for my family. I’m doing this for my friends. I’m doing this for my Lord. I’m doing this for myself. Because at the end of the day my best will always be good enough. It will always be better!”
- Phil “The Gift” Heath, 2013 Mr. Olympia Press Conference
Whether you like it or not, we are officially in the “Phil Heath Era” of bodybuilding. On September 28, 2013, before a packed house at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, the man dubbed “The Gift” proved that he is anything but a flash in the pan, interim successor to his friend and fellow legend Jay Cutler. From the second he stepped on stage, Phil’s superior level of detail, definition, fullness and conditioning set him apart from every other competitor on the sport’s biggest stage. As he hit his poses with veteran perfection, the audience went wild at the sight of history unfolding right before their eyes. Despite a few testy moments with archrival Kai Greene during the top ten callout, Phil’s victory never seemed in doubt.
After last year’s one point win over Kai, many fans were convinced that the young champ’s days at the top were numbered. They cited Heath’s swagger, high roller lifestyle and almost condescending confidence in his own talents as proof that he didn’t have the serious work ethic necessary to retain the Mr. Olympia title for years to come. Not only did he prove himself capable of handling the superhuman effort required to three-peat, he did it amidst terrible personal loss and family trauma as was apparent from his moving victory speech. This win proves without a shadow of a doubt that Phil Heath is not only the absolute best bodybuilder in the world – he’s still getting better!
