Chicago

For the third year in a row, Minneapolis-St. Paul tops list of fittest cities in America according to the American College of Sports Medicine

By Alex Zakrzewski, Online Editor

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) released its sixth annual American Fitness Index™ (AFI) data report earlier this week at its annual meeting. For the third straight year, the the Twin-Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul proved themselves to be well ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to community health and fitness. Not only did Minnesota’s largest metropolitan area have the best ranking of any in the U.S. with a score of 78.2, it actually saw an improvement over last year’s score of 76.4. At the extreme opposite end of the fitness spectrum was Oklahoma City, OK, which bottomed out for the second year in a row with a score of 31.2.

The AFI data report was established six years ago to help community leaders and health advocates improve the quality of life in America’s major cities. Taken into account are factors such as preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access and policies and initiatives that support health and fitness. The ACSM was assisted in the methodology of the report by the Indiana University School of Family Medicine and a panel of 26 health and physical activity experts. Further information on the report and its findings can found at www.americanfitnessindex.org.
